CRCA: Stan's NoTubes p/b enduranceWERX
TEAM NEWSLETTER SPRING 2014
The month of March witnessed an impeccable introduction for Stan's NoTubes p/b enduranceWERX 2014 Road Racing season, as the ladies in red proved arctic conditions, barely-thawed dirt roads, and NYC’s best riders were not enough to keep them from summiting the podiums. Our team training camp held in the chilly hills of Connecticut coupled with months of weekly indoor training sessions at enduranceWERX proved to be a winning combination.
Frigid temps for the first weekend of racing offered an exceptional challenge, but the team cleaned up at the first CRCA club race of the season with 1st and 2nd place. This strong performance, along with our other club race finishes for the month, place the team atop the CRCA Club Championship rankings. The team also holds 5 of the top-8 individual spots for the Club's individual rider honors.
The weekend of the Grant's Tomb Criterium provided a hint of spring with a reprieve from the cold, as well as offering a multitude of racing opportunities for women in NYC. A few of the Stan's ladies stepped up to the challenge of conquering three races in one day and garnering 6 podium finishes over all category levels! Undoubtedly, regular visits to the Athlete Recovery Center and the use of the air compression boots have made for happy bodies and fully recovered racers. Additionally on the path to recovering right, the team focused on good nutrition and the education surrounding it with the help of our sponsors TheFeed.com and Amrita Health Foods. Check out our recent photoshoot with Manual for Speed and The Feed about how we recover and prepare for races.
March also provided a weekly racing opportunity at the Bethel Spring Series in Southern Connecticut. The location and heritage of this series makes it an attractive racing venue for racers across New England and New York, with teams testing their legs and tactics on the windy course. Our two CT locals proved their affinity for teamwork, race tactics, and ultimately, their sprinting prowess by capturing the top podium spot for 6 of the 7 weeks, and rounding out the rest of the podium to boot! The team took home the Series Individual Leader title (Amanda Braverman), as well as second place (Cassie Maximenko), and the Series Team Award by generous margin.
Come April, a troupe of 8 Stan’s racers ventured north to take on the infamous dirt climbs of Tour of the Battenkill. In the cat 3/4 race, Sara committed herself to protecting teammate Cassie from the wind during the open sections of the course. Cassie astutely and decisively pulled away from the field with 20 miles to go, soloing to victory. She attributed much of the success to her confidence in her Stan’s NoTubes wheels and Hutchinson tires, which proved bulletproof on the sketchy and sandy dirt roads. In the Pro/1/2 field, the team secured yet another podium spot, as the ladies worked to get Cecilia into a successful breakaway, garnering her the 2nd place finish, with BrittLee winning the field sprint for 4th place. A full race report by Cecilia is featured on CRCA.net as well as on our newly built team website.

Back to the races...Late April provided a first glimpse into the world of international competition for the team. Brittlee, Camie, Helen, Becca and Mandy took trains, planes, and automobiles to join 120 other women at the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic(WSCC), one of the only two UCI races for women in the United States in 2014. The WSCC was held as two distinct races - a road race followed by a criterium - with an additional amateur race held in conjunction. The 57-mile road race had the Stan’s ladies lining up amongst a handful of National Champions from around the globe. The goal of the event for the Stan’s/EWX ladies was to gain experience and exposure on a heightened level...and that we did! The race was tremendously challenging and we were more than proud to be out there pushing our limits and to see Brittlee finish strong. Two of our riders opted to continue their day of racing by joining newly-minted Cat 2 rider, Tracey, at the amateur criterium. Beautifully-executed teamwork tactics allowed Tracey to escape into a 3-woman breakaway, which she ultimately won. Mandy and Helen then took 4th and 6th, respectively.
Day two of the WSCC brought the continuation of the NCC and USA Crits series, with a technically demanding course taking riders from wide-open roadways into tight corners and single-lane roads. The fierce pace and aggressive riding provided a truly valuable learning experience for all of our riders and we look forward to the next opportunity to test our legs (and mettle) against the best in the nation and world at upcoming NCC events.
In addition to the invite to the newly formed WSCC we are also extremely honored to have received the coveted invite to race the only other UCI road race in America, The Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic. The Philly race in steeped in tradition and for anyone who grew up bike racing in the U.S. its THE one-day race in the country. Additionally over the last decade the Amgen Tour of California has become the most publicised and prestigious multi-day event in the U.S. and we are excited to announce our invite to the women’s circuit race! We are thrilled to be part of a race that has drawn the focus of the world's cycling media and is choosing to include more women's racing. As a team, we have never had an opportunity of this magnitude and we are honored to have the support of our local New York State Bicycle Racing Association as well as multiple New York State businesses, including Stans NoTubes and Hatchmap.
In advance of the circuit race and to further hone our criterium racing skills, a group of five of us spent this past week down in South Carolina and Georgia racing at the USAcrit’s Speedweek. With races for amateurs and pros this was a great event for our team to travel with many levels of racers and gain valuable experience in some super fast races. We came out with some great results including Jen taking a podium spot in the cat 3/4 Roswell Criterium and Tracey consistently placing well all week in the pro races to ultimately land her 9th in the full Week Overall Standings!
After starting the season with three category 4 racers we are so proud to have already had all earn their upgrades to cat3 and additionally one of our cat3s just upgraded to cat2. We have found success in incorporating a range of experience levels within the team so as to help foster new women into the sport while also allowing riders to continually learn while teaching others. More info about each of our 14 ladies and their personal goals is on the Roster page on our website.
So look for us at the races! With our shiny, bright kits from Vie13 and modern POC helmets you can’t miss us! We are looking forward to the rest of the season! Thanks for being along for the ride, your support is what makes this all possible!
